Michael Combs at Pine Level Baptist Church in Cairo, Georgia

We had a great time listening to and Worshiping with Michael Combs. He makes me forget I’m a Baptist and I (almost) shout. Amen!

I was talking to church members before it began and they had no idea who Michael Combs was. They know now!

The Kingsmen Quartet at Sirmans Baptist Church in Greenville, FL

Very small church, but Kingsmen’s sound man Brandon did a great job of balancing the sound. Friendly church invited us to join them after concert for hot dogs and sandwiches in fellowship hall.
It was the first time we heard the Kingsmen Quartet, great harmony, top of our list. Ray Dean Reese is as good as he was 20 years ago.

The Hayes Family, Triumphant Quartet, Michael Combs, & The Inspirations at The Georgia Mountain Center in Gainesville, Georgia.

This was our first time at The Georgia Mountain Center. Parking was fair. The facility was nice, clean, well kept. Not great acoustics. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make any difference because on Dec. 15, 2012, Brenau College is leasing the entire center. The 2,500-seat arena will no longer be available for rent. Thanks for nothing Gainesville City Council!
We were joined at this event by my oldest daughter, Brandy, and 3½ year old grandson, Mik, who enjoys everything he does with Pop-Pop and Heather.

  • Hayes Family – I’m sorry, but they were really bad! When the mother and the sister playing the keyboard harmonized, it actually hurt my ears. Not just because it was way too loud, but it was bad. Others went out to the lobby to get away until the next group came on.
  • Michael Combs – Good set by him. He did all his standards, with many standing and raising their hands. My 3½ year old grandson was standing in the aisle by me mimicking his gestures and head shakes that Michael does at lot to get his hair out of his face.
  • Inspirations – This was definitely one of their better performances, powerful!
  • Triumphant Quartet – David Sutton, their tenor was not there. His wife had some unexpected surgery so he stayed home. Jeff Stice, the pianist, tried to fill in the 4th part. He did ‘fair’, the overall performance was well beneath their normal excellence. It was my oldest daughter’s first time hearing them. She certainly didn’t see why we drove 7 hours and were exited for her to see them. She lives up there, not us. Clayton Inman’s White Flag of Surrender was perfect! Heather keeps white handkerchiefs in her purse for Triumphant and The McKameys. I, #1 daughter Brandy, #2 daughter Heather, and Grandson Mik were waving our white flags.

The Sammy Glass Family at Providence Baptist Church in Whigham, GA

It is a small country church with friendly people. It nice to be in a true Southern Baptist Church. We sang from hymnals, they have RA’s, GA’s, and Acteens.

The Sammy Glass Family was good, the son sounds like Randy Travis. My only comment is Sammy, the dad, needs to leave the sound board alone. It was disruptive having him go adjust the sound board several times during every song.

Greater Vision at Fellowship Baptist Church in Brinson (Bainbridge), GA

We’ve been to this church before. They have friendly, outgoing people, nice auditorium, good acoustics. Of course I sat in exact same pew from March that isn’t bolted down and I almost knocked it over (again).

It’s been years since we listened to and worshiped with Greater Vision. I had forgotten how powerful their songs are and what a great group they are! We’re looking forward to spending New Year’s Eve ‘eve’ with them in Valdosta at Morningside Baptist.

Dixie Echoes & Mark Trammell Quartet at The Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Florida

  • Dixie Echoes – We were wondering how Stewart Varnado, the pianist could ever be replaced, but while we’ll miss Stewart, Ben Hart has stepped up in style. Heather loved the ‘antics’ of Stewart, but Ben is carrying on ‘the show’. The new bass singer Jordan James, and new tenor Craig Thomas fit nicely in the Dixie Echoes sound.
  • Mark Trammell Quartet – They have an entirely new sound since making the transition from trio to quartet. We enjoyed them before, but now they are one of the best quartets. They don’t put on a ‘show’, but it was a good ‘concert’.

The Bowling Family at Madison Church of God in Madison Family

Well, they started with a ‘sermonette’ from the pastor. Heather sat as close to me as possible because he scared her. He does, you know, one of these ‘singing-type’ of preaching like some black churches we’ve been to do. Anyway, combined with that and the congregation hollering and everybody praying out loud at the same time, Heather was scared. I wasn’t comfortable. One more thing, the men’s restroom had mounted deer heads and antlers on the wall. Yes it was a church.
Then, Mike Bowling wasn’t there, he wasn’t feeling well so he stayed in the bus. A local filled in. Enough said.
Then, the sound was SO loud for a small church, we walked out during the 2nd song. Never again for that church or The Bowlings. They owe me for gas for driving over a hundred miles round trip!

Punches Family at The Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Florida

I am NOT a Bluegrass Gospel fan, but this family is good and the kids are ”so” talented and cute that I enjoy hearing them. The kids did a great ‘Guitarzan’ skit (remember Ray Steven’s Guitarzan ) complete with authentic costumes. We will go see them again if they are close by.

Dove Brothers, Perrys, and Archie Watkins & The Smokie Mountain Reunion at The Thomasville City Auditorium in Thomasville, Georgia

This is Billy Hudson’s, from the Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Annual Labor Day Sing in Thomasville. Besides a great concert, we get to eat at The Seminole Wind buffet. The food is great and the owner is proud to display his Christian beliefs predominately.

  • Dove Brothers – Always great. Burman Porter is back singing the bass and is powerful! When he hits those low notes, my chest vibrates.
  • The Perrys – Great as always.
  • Archie Watkins & Smoky Mountain Reunion – Once again we’re not bluegrass fans, but they are kind of a crossover. We like them once a year.
