The Sammy Glass Family at Providence Baptist Church in Whigham, GA

It is a small country church with friendly people. It nice to be in a true Southern Baptist Church. We sang from hymnals, they have RA’s, GA’s, and Acteens. It was also nice to see two young boys reading books instead of playing on momma’s iPhone waiting for the concert to begin.

The Sammy Glass Family:

  1. WAY TOO LOUD! They had to have seen people with their fingers in their ears.
  2. I don’t remember them being this ‘twangy’.
  3. I said this last time, but Sammy needs to leave the soundboard alone. It was distracting having him go adjust the soundboard several times during every song.
  4. Sorry, facts are facts.

Mike Holcomb leaves The Inspirations

“Folks, we have an announcement to make.

Today, October 1st, Mike Holcomb has announced that he is resigning from The Inspirations. Mike has been singing bass for 42 years with us, and is one of the greatest bass singers to ever step on the stage. However, not only is Mike an incredible singer, but he is an amazing preachers as well! He feels that it is time for him to begin a “new season” in his life, and will be hitting the road full time in preaching and singing evangelism. We know God will use he, and his sweet wife Bavaria, in a tremendous way, but we are devastated to lose him.”

Dixie Echoes and Dixie Melody Boys at The Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Florida

  • The Lighthouse Girls led off as usual. They have a lot of new girls.
  • The Dixie Echoes have had a lot of turnover the past few years, but I personally think this is it. This is the best they have ever sounded. I would go see them again next weekend if they were in the area. They are still working on their on-stage group chemistry.
  • The Dixie Melody Boys have also gone through a lot of personnel changes the last couple of years. Their sound wasn’t what it used to be. They also seemed to be still working on their on-stage group chemistry.

Burman Porter leaves the Dove Brothers

Last night, bass singer Burman Porter announced his departure from the Dove Brothers. His Facebook status update indicated that this departure was due to health reasons. He said:

Many of you know that this past weekend during the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion I suffered chest pains that lead me to make a trip to the local emergency room on the night that I was to perform with the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion Quartet. After several rounds of blood tests, x-rays, and an EKG I was released with instructions to not be far from home and to see my family physician as quickly as possible. We were told that the source of my chest pain is stress…and that I should do anything within my ability to reduce my stress level in order to stop the pains and avoid future complications.

Following my doctor visit, and after talking with Robin, we informed McCray that we feel it best that I not return to the road with the group. McCray says he has found my replacement, so I’m sure you can look for his announcement sometime soon…but I wanted you to hear it from me first.

Greater Vision at Byne Memorial Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia

On our way back from North Georgia taking Heather to her sister Brandy’s baby shower we stopped in Albany to see Greater Vision.

Greater Vision was inspirational as always. It was a very friendly, traditional Southern Baptist church.

The McKameys at The Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Florida

  • The Lighthouse Girls led off as usual. There are a lot of new girls, so they’re still learning the songs, but they were inspirational as always!
  • The McKameys were powerful as usual. Mr. Ruben was not there. He was home sick., but Roger Fortner did a great job filling in.

Our friend Gene Sherron came with us, and took this picture. It was his first time at the Lighthouse. He seemed to enjoy it.

Collingsworth Family at Morningside Baptist Church, Valdosta, Georgia

This was the third time we heard The Collingsworth Family; a year ago at Morningside and about 6 months ago at the Lighthouse.

Let me say, as I have before, this is the friendliness church we have ever been in. There were greeters outside in the parking lot, in the vestibule, and again inside the sanctuary. As we sat there (we are always early to make sure we get the ‘right’ seat) church members went up and down the aisles shaking hands. Several people offered Heather a piece of candy or a lollipop. Heather enjoys the attention more that the candy. We always feel very welcome. The Pastor, Brother Wayne Robertson remembers us always and makes it a point to come over and say hello. He even remembers we’re from Tallahassee.

Dorman Thomas, from my home church came with us.

I also had a surprise guest show up. I invite her anytime we’re within an hour of Valdosta. After 11 years, she showed up. I was thrilled to spend a couple of hours siting there with Donna, a past girlfriend.

The Collingsworth Family was outstanding. The harmony was great. They bring a grand piano with them in a trailer they tow behind the bus to all performances. One of these days I’m going to watch them get it up on the stage.

Then, we introduced Dorman to Slap Daddy’s for dinner where we always eat when we’re in Valdosta. The have great hamburgers and fantastic onion rings.

Chuck Wagon Gang and the Dove Brothers Quartet at The Lighthouse Children’s Home in Tallahassee, Florida

  • The Lighthouse Girls led off as usual. They were inspiring.
  • Chuck Wagon Gang is always good, with a consistent sound, for 75 years now, and tonight was no exception.
  • The Dove Brothers have been our favorite for many, many years. The first 4 songs were way too loud and the band overpowered the singers. McCray then took an audience vote to see if we thought they were too loud. After the vote, he made adjustments on the sound board and the rest of the concert was good. They have decided to stay with the new more twangy sound. The prevailing opinion, with everyone I talked with during the break, is the steel guitar does NOT fit with their sound. It detracts, a lot.

Dixie Echoes at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Campground in Madison, Florida

We were here a couple of months ago. It’s only about an hour from our house and right on the Interstate. It has a very nice auditorium for a campground, comfortable seats, and climate controlled.

  • Amber, a local young lady started off singing a couple of songs. She had a nice voice, but I couldn’t understand any of the words because she had her soundtrack and mic up SO LOUD! I looked behind us and over half the people had their ears covered. You’d think she’d get the hint and turn it down…but no.
  • Dixie Echoes were good. They really haven’t had a consistent sound for the past several years because of a lot of group turnover. The only ones that stay are Randy Shelmut Sr. and Jr.(Scoot). This is like their 3rd or 4th bass and 4th or 5th tenor, and 3rd piano player in the last 3 years. We enjoyed them and it worth the hour drive.
